Security Is More Than Just the Lock

Most people think about upgrading the lock when they want better door security. But a lock is only one component of the overall door security system. The strongest lock in the world will not stop a forced entry if the door frame splits, the strike plate pops out, or the hinges fail. True apartment security requires attention to the entire door system.

This is especially relevant in NYC, where building age varies enormously -- from pre-war buildings with solid wood doors and original frames to modern buildings with hollow-core doors and lightweight frames. The right improvements depend on what you are starting with.

Reinforce the Strike Plate

The strike plate is the metal plate on the door frame where the deadbolt extends into. In many buildings, it is secured with two short screws (less than one inch) that only bite into the thin door frame molding. A strong kick can rip these screws right out.

The fix is simple and inexpensive: replace the strike plate with a reinforced version that uses 3-inch screws. These longer screws anchor into the structural framing behind the door molding, dramatically increasing kick-in resistance. A locksmith can install a reinforced strike plate during a lock change for minimal additional cost.

Upgrade Your Deadbolt

If your apartment has only a knob lock with no deadbolt, adding one should be your first priority. Knob locks alone offer minimal security because the latch mechanism can be bypassed with basic tools. A quality deadbolt with at least a 1-inch throw bolt provides meaningful resistance to forced entry.

For maximum security, choose an ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt with a UL 437 listing. Brands like Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Abloy offer the highest pick, bump, and drill resistance available. Even a mid-range Schlage B660P offers excellent physical security at a more accessible price point.

Consider Door Reinforcement Kits

Door reinforcement kits wrap the door edge and frame in a steel sleeve, distributing the force of a kick across a much larger area. Products like the Door Devil or Armor Concepts EZ Armor can be installed by a locksmith or a handy tenant. They are particularly effective on hollow-core doors, which are vulnerable to splitting.

Check Your Hinges

If your apartment door opens outward (into the hallway), the hinge pins may be exposed and accessible from the outside. An intruder could simply pop the pins and remove the door, bypassing the lock entirely. Solutions include security hinges with non-removable pins, hinge pin setscrew locks, or stud-type hinge bolts that interlock when the door is closed.

Additional Security Measures

  • Wide-angle peephole: A 180-degree or 200-degree peephole lets you see who is at the door without opening it. Digital peephole cameras add the ability to see visitors remotely.
  • Door security bar: A floor-mounted security bar braces against the door from the inside, providing additional resistance even if the lock is defeated.
  • Secondary lock: NYC tenants have the right to install additional locks at their own expense. A surface-mounted deadbolt (like a Segal lock, which is extremely common in older NYC apartments) adds another layer.
  • Door alarm sensor: A simple battery-operated sensor that alerts you when the door is opened unexpectedly. Useful when you are home alone.
  • Smart lock with activity log: A smart lock that records when the door was opened and by whom provides accountability and early warning of unauthorized access.

For Renters: What You Can and Cannot Do

In NYC rentals, you can add locks at your own expense and must provide the landlord a key. You generally cannot modify the door itself (routing new holes, changing the swing) without landlord permission. Reinforced strike plates, security bars, and peepholes are usually permissible modifications. When in doubt, ask your landlord in writing and keep their response.

If the existing door or frame is inadequate -- rotten wood, warped frame, loose hinges -- that is a maintenance issue the landlord is required to address. Document the condition and submit a repair request through proper channels.

Frequently Asked Questions

A reinforced strike plate with 3-inch screws. It is inexpensive, easy to install, and dramatically increases resistance to the most common forced entry method: kicking. Most residential burglaries that involve door entry succeed because the strike plate fails, not the lock.

Most door reinforcement kits do not permanently modify the door and can be removed when you move out. However, check with your landlord first, especially in buildings with strict modification policies. Keeping the original hardware to reinstall when you leave is good practice.

Door chains provide minimal security against forced entry -- they can typically be broken with one strong push. Their primary value is allowing you to partially open the door to speak with someone or accept a delivery while maintaining a barrier. For actual security, a deadbolt and reinforced strike plate are far more effective.
